I wouldn`t know where to start to find out if it`s allowed or not..I`m sure I`m not alone.
I think we all have that problem. I don't intentionally breach copyright but everytime I put a photo or video clip on this forum I realise that there is that risk. Most of the things I put on come from Youtube or the BBC. The clips on Youtube invite you to share the link with others and provide you with the clip address. So that seems to be safe. Anyway the clip has Youtube shown at the start so no-one is in any doubt as to where that has come from. As far as the BBC is concerned, I only provides links to articles on their site rather than copying the article on to the forum site. I always say in my posting that I have taken this from the BBC website, so I don't see that that can be breach of copyright. For the Tenniel picture I included here, John Tenniel died in 1914 and Lewis Carroll in 1898. So the two died more than 70 years ago, so as far as I know that's out of copyright.
As for other material, that's beyond my knowledge - I'm not a copyright lawyer. It is common practice for the concept of fair use to be applied. So I guess that provided people are being fair in what they include they should be OK, unless the material in question (such as Disney material) states that any copying is regarded as infringement. In most countries (but not all), breach of copyright is a civil offence (ie damages can be claimed), but in some countries breach is a criminal offence (I don't know which countries).
I think it would be dangerous for anyone to post a link to a site known for pirated material and it would be dangerous to start showing clips from films.
