My initial response was essentially the same as Saz - "none of the above."


I disagree about "broth" being like a stew, though: although we're used to "Scotch Broth", broth is properly a thin soup. It's the same as "stock" - it's the water that you've boiled meat, fish or vegetables in.


A beverage is a liquid prepared for drinking. So: a glass of milk is a beverage, but a bowl of milk and cereal?


A sauce is "a liquid or soft preparation used as a relish with food". Hmmm. Possibly the closest, but it's really still an accompaniment to a dish designed to add flavour - not an integral part of the dish itself.
