A Happy Birthday to Akira Kurosawa on what would have been his 100th birthday.
He was probably Japan's most famous film director and the chances are that if you can name one Japanese film, he directed it - The Seven Samurai being his most famous.
Of the films I've seen, I rate his Throne of Blood as the best. The title, although accurate, gives the wrong impression as this is in fact a Japanese version of Macbeth and is possibly the best film based on a Shakespeare play (rivalling Olivier's Henry V).
In more than one way Kurosawa stood out from the crowd. He was 5 ft 11.5 inches, which by Japanese standards was extremely tall.
