Obviously the closing down of Redker Steelwairks was big news in the North. As we know monetarists only ever look at the balance sheet and never the structural effects on communities. Do we think that this government may reject the thirty year philosophy and nationalise something?

Would the government be allowed under EU competition rules to nationalise the company? They wouldn't be allowed to subsidise the steel to make it cheaper in the market, I expect, so they government would be supporting a chronic loss with national tax-payers' money, wouldn't it? The part-nationalised banks caused the government problems in this area, if I recall correctly.
