Yes, Vinnie does seem to mean what he says, but gets away with it in the house because he gurns when he says it.

Oh god, that was fantastic! I could almost hear Vinnie's brain whirring and clicking while he tried to work out whether or not to show he was offended! He so was.

But he decided to laugh it off - probably because he remembered he always expects the others to see the "funny side" of all his barbed little comments.
