Just take a trip up with no expectations.  The dog will choose you.  We went up to NCDL (now dogstrust) 14 years ago, thinking that perhaps we'd like a little brown dog.  Jakey jumped up and licked Mr Veg's nose through a little gap in his kennel and he's still with us, going strong   He's much bigger than we thought we'd chose and black.

Completely agree with tartainveggie's comments, the dog will pick you.  I love the Westie.

As this is a thing that is close to my heart can I point you in this direction?  These dogs are not difficult to keep, in fact down right lazy (!) and  make wonderful family companions, I own one and she is a pleasure to have in the house, sleeps for most of the day and occasionally rouses herself to go for a walk.  I can totally recommend one of these dogs as a pet and would do so to most people.  I have put the main link to the website and also this link which is for the Midlands/East Anglia, as I noticed you were looking at the Dog's Trust in Evesham, also a link to the RGT at what would probably be your nearest track, Hall Green in Birmingham.
