I would suggest co-codemol. Codeine is the best thing for really sore throats.

Does anyone remember stuff called bronchial mixutre (im sure it was that) it was a bottle of thick brown liquid that you made into a hot drink. It smelled really potent and really warmed your throat and chest. My mother always used to give it to me when i was little and it was great. ive tried to buy it in recent years but nowhere seems to do it or even know of it. Chemists look at me with a blank expression when i have asked.

Now that I can cope with!
They recently advertised a new anaesthetic throat spray on the telly. I can't remember its name but Boots should stock it.

Gargling disolvable dispirin/solpadeine is the best, but if you don't have that gargle a glass of salted water...sip by sip...not all in one go
I had a really bad sore throat last year, the only thing that even slightly helped was having a good cry. And that only helped about 2%
Toffees.
