I understand you can mobile phone `jammers` or `immobilizers`.
Not cheap, and I think their range might be limited. But a limited range is fine because you would only want to use it in your own vicinity.
I'd love to have one!

Luckily, most people seem to use their discretion and dont use phones in restaurants or cinemas or in the quiet carriage on trains or other such 'special' places. I think it's a bit far fetched to ask for them to be banned in shops though.

it annoys me on the bus when they say, I'm on the bus, i know I'm in the wrong, but it just does

No your not in the wrong.........Getting off the train the other day the woman sitting next to me spoke to her husband the whole way home, and when he met her on the platform they were still using their phones while talking to one another in person
stoory - you remind me of 2 people sending `happy new year` texts when they were in the same room.
On the bus a rather loud phone user was giving a running commentary to someone, and getting towards his stop he said "Put the potatoes on love - I'll see you in 2 minutes."
(I bet those 2 minutes made all the difference to their meal.)

I think for me, the thing about not liking to see people on the phone while being served, is that the shop assistant is not getting one's undivided attention. It is, sort of, shutting somebody out of a 2-person interraction.
I just see it as a courtesy thing.

I need a new mobile. Mine is the earliest Nokia you can get-- no camera, apps-- nowt, Hope one of my kids buys me a new one for Xmas.

Nowt as queer as SOME folk.
REAL - ...if you play your cards right between now and Christmas....
I text loads - hardly use it as a phone though! I get unlimited texts for ÂĢ15 a month. When I'm texting on buses, trains etc I have it on silent so it doesn't annoy people. Other people talking loudly on their phones annoy me!
I have worked in a shop and it's very rude for people to talk on their phone and ignore you!!

Nice comments liver....very thoughtful.
I can't stand people walking along while on their phones - for some reason, they seem to lose all sense of what's around them and either get in the way or shout into their sets directly behind other people's ears.
I hate phone-using drivers with a passion. I've nearly been knocked down (on crossings) by them more than once.
And I can't stand phones going off in cinemas/theatres. It's just appalling manners, and a sign of a deeply sad individual if they can't bear to be out of reach even for a couple of hours.

Excellent post Demantoid.I so very much agree about drivers using a mobile - I think that is unforgiveable, and could result in somebody's death. Appalling.
And phones in theatres (in spite of management issuing a request) is truly ill-mannered. Selfish and thoughtless people.
Good post Deman

I have also almost been hit by drivers with a phone to their ear....I do answer the phone when i am driving but i use a bluetooth headset and I only have to click the button on it.....I see people driving around on the phone in big fancy cars and wonder if they can afford the car, why the hell can't they fork out ÂĢ15 for a headset?????
Oh, and speaking of headsets...why do people WALK around town with their phone in their hand talking into a headset...they look ridiculous....headsets are fine in cars, I even use mine in the house when I'm getting ready to go out and a friend rings....I have both hands free that way...

My usual thought, when I see someone walking along and apparently talking to his/herself is "poor soul - schizophrenia?"

Would it be practical for a shop to have a rule stating they would not serve customers who were at the same time using a mobile? A number of forumers clearly think it is rude.
I expect it woudl be difficult for larger chain stores and supermarkets to do this, but I have been in two small local shops where they have signs at the till asking customers not to use mobile phones. One of them just has a very polite notice asking customers to refrain from using their phone whilst being served. The other was a little more direct, and said that if the customer was rude enough to continue to talk on their phone when it was their turn to be served, the shop assistant would display a similar lack of manners and refuse to serve them until they had stopped
