The big problem you're going to have is that both "manga" and "anime" are blanket terms, and the actual content can vary enormously. I'm only really familiar with the films, and it's difficult to recommend anything for a 12-year-old: most of the "classics" are meant for older teens (e.g. "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell" are both 15-certificate.)

One that you might want to look into is "Astro Boy". This is hugely popular, and there's a big-budget film out in January, so I would suspect that a lot of the old comic-books and TV series will be re-released. (The orginal Japanese series was the first to be considered "anime".) I expect the new film to be PG.

Having said that: the film is US-backed, and the reviews I've seen so far are terrible, but still - might be worthwhile as a starting point...

The porn manga is normally called hentai

Letraset do a starter kit for doing your own manga drawings... its a set of top quality oil  (oops.. edited... should have been alcohol) based markers pens, outliner and book on how to do manga & chibi drawings (I have this set... its really good....  even I can do half decent manga pics with it).

As fern just said... Dragonball Z & Naruto are good gateway manga, also my daughter is shouting 'deathnote' Yu-Gi-Oh & Bleach at me!
