Despite widespread opposition from the public and ISPs et, the Government has announced that it intends to require the likes of ISPs to keep records of everyone's use of the internet.

See the BBC article on this.

The core of the article reads:

The Home Office says it wants to change the law to compel communication service providers (CSPs) to collect and retain records of communications from a wider range of internet sources, from social networks through to chatrooms and unorthodox methods, such as within online games.

Ministers say that they do not want to create a single government-owned database and only intend to ask CSPs to hold a record of a contact, rather than the actual contents of what was said.

So everytime someone posts something on Twitter for instance, Twitter will have to keep a record showing who sent it, where it was sent, and when, but not the actual content.

Apart from the continuing erosion of privacy in this country, it will slow down internet use, be costly to implement, and create massive databases full of mostly useless data.

The article refers to online games - well the biggest one of all is World of Warcraft which is American - will the UK Government expect Blizzard to comply?

I assumed that HMG already had the capacity, both technically and storage wise, to do this, and would probably do so
No they don't at present - they say they need to change the law so that they can.
