Haven't read any replies as I've not got time to but saw this on the News and felt sad that once again an innocent girl has lost her life through naieveity of believing that some online are to be trusted. I feel so sorry for her and her parents who will be grieving her loss from their life so badly.
News this morning has said that the man will be charged later today with kidnap, manslaughter and for not registering his new address which is compulsory as he is on the sex offenders register.
manslaughter?
I don't know the details of what happened, so can't really comment on whether the charge should be manslaughter or murder.

Indeed! As you know, I live just down the road and the more info we hear about this case, the more puzzling it becomes.
I agree crossy, very odd.
No matter how blue in the face you go warning youngsters about t'interweb, they always think they know better...what a terrible thing to happen
On the news just now, poor mother appealing for other parents to check what their kids get up to on the internet. The bloke will be back in court next month.
I'm not on face book or bebo etc.Do they have a minimum age for joining or is it left to parents to police?
I'm not sure Katty, my boy has a FB account, but to be honest I log on to his page more often than he does.
I think there is a minimum age,but nothing to stop you changing your DOB.
Kids always think they know better than their parents...its all part of growing up to push boundaries..and from a parents pov its trying to get the balance right between keeping them safe and giving them the skills to cope in the big wide world.
The Net probably allows people to be more subtle if they want to make advances to kids (and lonely adults too).I remember my parents being equally worried about strangers in cars and the fact they may be abductors.I also know a girl when I was growing up who had a 'secret' bf she hid from her parents who turned out to be a complete lunatic who locked her up in a room(it was never disclosed what he did but he went away for a long time).
Its easier to hide behind a false ID online, but the internet's not the cause..just a vehicle. As in rl most folk you defriend will be genuine, but theres always a chance they could be disingenuous too.
Every parents worst nightmare

I think its 13 for Bebo and 18 for FB but the children just do the maths and have their DOB down as 18....
Ah Thanks. The girls mother was on TV warning parents not to let underage kids use facebook. As she was 17 I was wondering if there was an age limit.

The problem is these monsters pretend to be people who they are not. Having recently watched the ITV documentary 'To Catch a Paedophile' I consider everyone who talks to children online to be a risk and unfortunately I'm jaded and will not change my mind. The dirty Mac brigade are long gone, these creatures who groom children are no longer recognizable, they could be your friends.
Hear, hear you really can't be too careful imo.I think Mark Williams-Thomas who did that programme is absolutely brilliant. I've met him a few times in rl and had dinner and drinks with him - he also happens to be v v fanciable
