I think there is a minimum age,but nothing to stop you changing your DOB.
Kids always think they know better than their parents...its all part of growing up to push boundaries..and from a parents pov its trying to get the balance right between keeping them safe and giving them the skills to cope in the big wide world.
The Net probably allows people to be more subtle if they want to make advances to kids (and lonely adults too).I remember my parents being equally worried about strangers in cars and the fact they may be abductors.I also know a girl when I was growing up who had a 'secret' bf she hid from her parents who turned out to be a complete lunatic who locked her up in a room(it was never disclosed what he did but he went away for a long time).
Its easier to hide behind a false ID online, but the internet's not the cause..just a vehicle. As in rl most folk you defriend will be genuine, but theres always a chance they could be disingenuous too.
Every parents worst nightmare

The problem is these monsters pretend to be people who they are not. Having recently watched the ITV documentary 'To Catch a Paedophile' I consider everyone who talks to children online to be a risk and unfortunately I'm jaded and will not change my mind. The dirty Mac brigade are long gone, these creatures who groom children are no longer recognizable, they could be your friends.
Hear, hear you really can't be too careful imo.

I think Mark Williams-Thomas who did that programme is absolutely brilliant. I've met him a few times in rl and had dinner and drinks with him - he also happens to be v v fanciable
