It is difficult to describe a sound, but I'll try.
Have you noticed that over the last year or two many American women are speaking with a croaky voice?  Mainly (but not only) actresses - but perhaps that is only because I hear them more.
A friend of mine says it is like broken glass, but I prefer croaky. It is a sort-of hard edged sound in the throat.

I believe Reece Witherspoon has it, and Britney Spears when singing.
It can't be anything to do with global warming, or something in the water.
I can only think it is a sort of fashion, and that they have deliberately developd it.
Do you know the sound I mean?

Lauren Bacall it is not - more like a sore-throated frog.

I wonder if they are trying to make it sound like a drawl? It sounds very harsh and unpleasant.

I loathe it; hate it; cannot stand it.

But why are so many of them doing it?

(Please tell me you know the sort of voice I am trying to describe.)
