We won! Well, for the moment at least. Tesco have withdrawn their planning application to build a new superstore approximately 200 yards from where I live in Holmfirth. The application was rejected after the council received the petition and over 1000 letters from residents. It would have had a major impact on the town and for me personally, so thanks for your help.

Excellent Queenie, well done!
People power!
You always have to be vigilant and keep an eye on local plans. Me and OH had a smaller victory of our own a few weeks back. There's an empty corner shop at the end of our road, and the owner wanted to change it to a takeaway that would have had a kitchen vent opening right onto our street, and be open till 1am at weekends.
He claimed in his application there were no other takeaways in the area - there are actually 10 within five minutes' walk. He also claimed there was parking - but it's right on a zebra crossing.
We got a petition together, objected to the planning committee and it got refused. Hoorah!

Well done Demantoid, just goes to show that if people pull together, we CAN make a difference!
Well done QOTHT and Dermatoid, about time people stood up to these big companies and showed them.
Our local council seems to think it can just roll rough shod all over people in matters like this after inflicting a national joke on us (the Public building) if anyone has heard of that, instead of renovating the public baths they closed and forcing car parking charges through and not improving public transport and making the out of town shopping centres like Merry Hill more attractive that they already were because of the free parking, then taking one of the few town centre car parks we already had and deciding to build a new college there, making it impossible almost to park in the town centre and then the Council wonder why people are going to Merry Hill and other boroughs to shop because there is free parking.
And don't get me started on the social services, the poor education figures that will magically be changed by rebuilding all the schools in the area, as if this helps. They need decent teachers for a start off.
All in all writing this down, it makes me wonder why I still live in the area, simple, it's home.
Queen, is Holmfirth where Last of the Summer Wine filmed, the name sounded familiar?

Well done to you too Deman, it's good to know that sometimes people power does work.
PB - Yes, Holmfirth is where they film Last Of The Summer Wine.

Well I'm really glad they didn't get permission, because it looks a beautiful place.Reference:

It is. A huge Tesco would have literally destroyed the town as over half the traders said they would be forced to close their shops. Plus the natural vista is stunning, a dirty great supermarket would ruin that. We are so lucky to have such fantastic views. I'll really miss that when we move.Reference:

I can imagine Queenie. my friend lives in a place called Bettystown (Nr. Droheda just North of Dublin), when I first went over 6/ 7 years ago it was a quaint little place, dusty roads, lovely thatched little houses etc...now there's a massive monstrocity of a hotel and a mahoosive Tesco right across the road.....it's completely souless now...so glad you got it stopped!
Well done QOTHT and Deman. I am so glad you'v` had a good result.
Babies...petitions... I don`t know how you do it.
(That was a rhetorical question - I do know how you do it.)
