you could say that an actor smoking in any scene is against the laws as they are at work! but the law exempts actors who have to portray characters that smoke on stage and screen

I'm confused. You say you are too intelligent to watch them, yet how do you know if they ever show scenes with them smoking inside or not?

To be honest, in this day and age where the message in general is smoking is a 'No No'  I am amazed how many films and T.V series show people smoking.

I think you can get special dispensation of puffing in the arts. In the same way, characetsr can smoke in plays.

You can smoke out the back of the Rover's Return should you wish.

The Rovers has a smoking shelter, not sure about the Queen Vic cause I don't watch it and I don't think anyone smokes in Emmerdale, apart from one episode where a character was shown smoking outside.

In Corrie you see Peter going outside for a cigarette when he is at the bookies and Becky going to the smoking shelter at the Rovers, but not much indoor smoking, but I suppose the law has to cover this, as even though it is a work place, they are showing people in their homes and it would not be realistic if some, even in today's anti smoking world (yes I smoke), were not smoking.

Strangely enough, my husband said the same thing whilst watching Corrie a few weeks ago.

He doesn't from what I read. The question was 'How do they LEGaALLY portray this OR do they not? In my book that indicates not knowing either way. Which is consistent with claiming never to watch these programmes.

But none of the above really answer the question of how it is LEGALLY portrayed or avoided without looking unralistic.

P.S. I don't watch soaps either.

His assumptive post was indicative that he has seen the programmes, it did not give the impression of someone who genuinely did not know. But then again, to try and have a reasonable conversation let alone a debate with someone who's opening line is 'Thankfully I have the brains to not watch any soaps but for those of you that do...' is always going to prove a problem.

Ignorance is indeed bliss it seems.

Are you and your friends only concerned, or interested, in problems of this sort affecting 'continuing drama' filming, or could it be any TV drama, or film?

Or was it just an excuse to have a dig at people who watch soaps?

Oh well pardon me for not explaining, I was just showing how smoking was shown on soaps, as to the law, I am only a thick, soap watching housewife who doesn't understand how the law works in regard to the smoking whilst working on stage/set issue.

Smoking on the radio is much easier.

Unlike their Scottish counterparts, actors in England are exempt from the ban during performance if and when smoking is integral to the plot.

This thread just leaves me wondering - if you don't watch the soaps, why would you care?

Is this thread soapist, or smokeist?  Are soaps the issue, or is it smoking? Is OP too intelligent for one but not the other?   Would rather watch the characters smoking, than slurpy slurping all over each other, sounding like water logged hoovers!    

The law does not affect those acting. For example in theatres you can still legally smoke on stage.

Explains why they can still do it in the Houses of Parliament then eh?
