My hubby went into hospital with pancreatitis earlier this year so I hope I have some insight into what you're feeling.

I found that you have to focus on what is best for the patient and I tried to keep a positive demeanour so my DH would be able to concentrate on getting better and not worry about me. I know you're really worried - I had lots of little cries too Smiler

I hope your mum is OK and please keep us updated - could it be kidney stones?

they said kidney stones when she first went in but then yesterday they said it wasn't kidney stones it was an infection and they staretd treating her with antibiotics - htye said she would probably be home today but today they said she had swelling in the kidney not an infection and they need to do a ct scan to find out what it is - I am so scared that it may be cancer or something like that!!

PP, my dad went in with kidney problems last year, he had let it go on too long without getting attention (as men do) and so it was quite bad, and he had only one kidney in the first place.

However a few days in hospital and he was absolutely back to normal Thumbs Up.....I'm sure your mam has both kidneys so it's highly likely they can sort her out much easier.

Try not to worry, she's in the best place Hug

I know it's hard but please try and stay positve, loads of things can go wrong with our bodies and it doesn't mean it can't be fixed, although most of us think the worst. I hope your mums ok and hope you can keep strong for you and her Hug

they're not sending her home now - they said yesterday they were going to today but now they have changed their mind!!

It's really unlikely to be cancer - it could just be a blockage in her tubes or something that has disagreed with her kidneys or something like that. Please please try not to worry too much. As someone else said there's so much that they can do these days!

I have been living with renal failure for nearly two years now, so I know a bit about kidney functioning (or not).

Is she still passing normal amounts of urine? If not, she will be restricted on the amount of fluids she can have. Ask the nurses if you should be bringing in things for her to drink.

Chances are, it's a bad infection and it will be cleared up with the antibiotics. The CT scan is not painful and will give the doctors more insight into what is going on.

PP its only natural for you to be upset and having a good cry helps to release all that pent up emotion and anxiety you're feeling but now you've done that it would be good for you to start thinking positive for your Mum and sending out lots of loving healing thoughts which will make both you and your mum feel better and stronger Hug. Please don't worry you are not alone even tho' you may feel you are Hug

Sounds like you could use some company - why not go to a friends for an hour or so, rather than sit alone worrying? It's easy to let your imagination run riot when you're alone..
Have they specifically said there's no stones or infection? Swelling's often caused by infection.. whatever, it's good that they're being thorough and checking everything out rather than discharging her..

Take care, eh?Smiler

Just been to the hospital - they are saying the urine sample they sent to the lab shows no infection - they say it could still be kidney stones though!!

I know there are a few on here who have had kidney stones - when you did - did you have an ultrasound and a ct scan if you did have an ultrasound were you ever told it looked like a layer of food in the kidney?? ALso did you find that you couldn't stop going to the toilet??
P
I had an ultrasound Pretty... but then I was pregnant so they were looking to make sure the baby was ok... and then they had a look at my kidneys.

They didn't say anything about food... though the comment about food from the doctors is a strange one, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a communication problem there... perhaps a doctor trying to dumb it down too much, and talking twaddle.

And I can't remember if I needed the loo all the time... sorry. Again, as I was preggers, I pretty much needed it a lot anyway.

If its a stone(s).... they should know soon, and start a treatment plan for her.

I know nothing about kidney stones or infections so can't advise you. If you have questions though don't be shy to ask the doctors at the hospital. I'm not saying anything against anyone here but you need to hear this from a doctor.....a doctor who is treating your mum. From my experience of hospitals they are never forthcoming with thier information but will tell you if you ask Hug

Hug For you hun

Hug And for your mum.

No good saying 'Don't Worry' I suppose as you will worry anyway.
Just try to make sure that you understand whatever the medics tell you about your mum's condition. Would it help if you wrote a few questions down before you go to the hospital so you don't forget to ask them what you want to know?
I'm sure as much as you are worrying about your mum, she will be worrying about you - it's kinda what us mums do Red Face

Find out if there is anything she wants you to do for her like getting books from the library or a little job at home - anything that keeps you busy.

goodpoint! Don't be scared to ask if you don't understand what they're saying.. ask them exactly what they mean by food in the kidney! Hope it's sorted soon and that you'refeeling calmer.

I'm terrible for it. Whether it's doctors, dentists, plumbers, mechanics etc. I ask them to explain as if they were talking to a child. It works though. I come away knowing exactly what's happening and why.

When it comes to doctors I think sometimes they use big long medical terms and those in themselves can put the fear of God in you. Once it's explained simply it more often than not puts your mind at rest
