There's a programme on called How The Other Half Live, I missed the beginning so I'm not completely sure what's going on, but it feels really exploitative and uncomfortable to watch.

No sorry. I am watching America's Got Talent. Slushy contrived crap it is. But I LOVE it.
Mr Veg got some Scottish mince thing on STV on.
I am. She spend the last of it on a laptop for a business she hasn't yet got. No shoes for the kid?
I'm not, but I watched it last week. It does leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Sounds interesting. I might watch it on Ch4 + 1, and watch BB at 11pm on Ch4 + 1 after it AGT finishes at 10pm.

I read "mince" totally wrong and thought that Mr Veg must have been watching the 10 minute teaser on one of "those" channels!
Watched it last week but thought I'd watch his nibbs play wii tennis this week.
I saw the last five mins last week and was disgusted. Not the sort of thing I want to watch TBH ........how patronising and ............................can't think of the word but - not nice IMO.
You know, I hate Secret Millionaire too,. Something about it makes me nauseous and makes me cringe, and I have never had the nerve to say it, because I thought I'd be slated for being a bitch, and also I am not sure why I hate it. Thanks Jamie. Looks like I am not the only one who isn't comfortable with these shows.quote:Originally posted by jamieboy:

I dunno, I think its very humbling... I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm ok, comfortable. I think we forget/dont realise how hard it can be for people to make ends meet. Last week the woman spent money on school uniforms for her daughters - you just dont think that this sort of thing happens here, that people cant get the proper uniforms... I thought the schools would provide them if people couldn't afford them Oh, and one of the girls was sleeping on a mattress on the floor cos her bed base broke and they couldn't afford to replace it
This could get ugly.
That woman looks like a crystal meth addict. She's only in her 40s, looks terrible.
On the end of the letter..'we would like to buy kids school uniforms and stuff..' She might as well have just said 'gimme more money, spent the last lot.' I mean, carry bag and webcam, but no frigging coats for the kids.
Hope they sponsor the kids only hahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

I'm not sure what it's trying to achieve. The fact that the woman from the poor family spent all that money on a laptop when her kids need clothes seems to reinforce a very negative stereotype.
I am watching it I watched it last week for the first time and loved it ,the family who were quite well off really helped the family who did not have much money and they became good friends it was a lovely story
I am an the other are not happy about 500 quid on laptop
and the kids have no clothes or wardrobe

'Please can we have a holiday'

Good point. She's not exactly a walking advert for her natural skin creams.

Yes. I have been watching it. The woman from the poor family (Michaela?) looks like she's been etched out of Hogarth. She's quite an achievement.

DOCUMENTARY: How The Other Half Live
On: Channel 4 (4)
Date: Thursday 6th August 2009 (16 minutes left)
Time: 21:00 to 22:00 (1 hour long)
Continuing the story of two families as a wealthy family decides to assist one that is living below the poverty line. Nine-year-old Brandon lives with his brother, mum and step-dad Shaun in one of the South East's most deprived neighbourhoods. Shaun works 40 hours a week as a bus driver and now, council tax arrears mean the bailiffs have been round. Brandon doesn't even have a bedroom. At night he goes to bed in his mum's room and is carried through to sleep on the sofa when she goes to bed. He can also hear people fighting outside his block of flats at night. Ashley and Daisy live with their mum and dad Sam and Scott in a secure gated community. They also have a house in Spain. Ashley is learning to play golf and has his own set of clubs. Daisy has a selection of designer handbags. Scott works hard to provide a nice life for his family but Sam knows that life isn't like this for everyone: she grew up in a 16-storey block of flats and doesn't want her kids to take things for granted.

The family last week were lovely... the woman paid off all the bills and her daughters. Then with the next lot she started doing a course while the kids were at school so she could better provide for them
