Although I've no interest in the Monarchy I thought that was rather endearing.

I read recently somewhere that everyone who writes to the Queen receives a reply. Ok it may or may not come from her personally but will have her signature. Would love to know sometime if Rodrigo receives a reply

yes yellow rose i read this as well he will get something back and it will be in house i would think depend how quick they send them out lol
C
I also have no interest in the monarchy. I think for outsiders it's something novel and they see it as reflecting a long history and tradition which their own state may not have. So I don't think it's a well thought out love of it necessarily.

It goes much deeper than that. It's possibly more about the powers that control your lives. Given the choice, which regime would you prefer to live under? UK, Brazil, or Pakistan?

True, a very valid point.

I'm quite sure we will get to hear the reply .....probably accompanied by a party with cucumber sandwiches and the full works.

There are democracies which are prosperous and don't have a monarchy. I'm just saying that what you say isn't the reason that some foreigners are necessarily interested in the monarchy. They like the pageantry, the history. It doesn't go deeper than that with most I believe. It's a tourist's view.

prosperity has very little to do with it. Stability and tradition is more the reason behind it.

I understand what you are saying and I agree with you, But in this case I was talking specifically about Rodrigo and Hira, Brazil and Pakistan compared to the UK, about their reactions to the letter and the reason why I felt they responded in that way.
B
I think Hira and Rod are under the impression it will be delivered to the Queen herself and thats why they are so overwhelmed by it all. They dont realise it will, at the very best, be chucked in the post and end up in a pile of thousands on some secretary's desk.

I don't agree FT. The alternative to the Monarchy is the armoured cars going up to Buckingham Palace, and people who come to Britain recognise it as having a stable political system, with the Queen as its figurehead. Presidents just don't hack it and visitors see it as something fixed and permanent, non-changing and safe. There is something to be said for a tradition going back nearly a thousand years, a permanence with only one hiccup along the way. It was notable that only a few of the Brits knew who the Duke of Edinburgh was and so the Monarchy is taken for granted within Britain, but visitors admire it.

Well I suppose we don't know precisely the reasons why they respond in a particular way, they would have to be asked that personally. From Rodrigo I just get the impression that he wants to meet the Queen as he considers her an important person in an important position and no more than that. I'm not sure he has much knowledge about monarchy or it's development. Maybe he just sees it as a symbol in some way of things he thinks he likes about Britain. It's probably something he considers uniquely British like tea or other things.

I think it's fair to say that the "real" personalities of the new housemates have all been unmasked by now.

Think how Bea and David both were when they first joined, and how they've changed now into their real selves.

Hira hasn't changed at all. Why? Because she's been genuine from the start.Smiler
So she's went from saying and doing nowt to.....
Mad dancing dressed as a mouse or cat? Confused to being totally moved to tears by Rodders meeting the queen!? Confused Big Grin

This thread has got sidetracked a bit. I was never opening up a debate on whether monarchy is a good thing or not. I was speaking about why Rodrigo (and maybe Hira) find it so interesting and important. Of course we can only speculate why they do but I haven't heard them talk about the issues that you brought up there.

Why do you think the Queen is a scrounger, let alone the biggest one in the nation?

Her family gave much of their property to the state more than 200 years ago. In return, they get an income from the Civil List. If they hadn't made that arrangement, they would be much more wealthy by now.

I guess abroad there is a certain image(s) of Britain that are used to denote Britishness time and again ............The Union Jack and The queen being amongst the most widelt used I guess.

I suppose like France it's the Eiffel Tower and Brazil that big angel over Rio de Janeiro - I guess it's quite rare to have a person in the identity as a lot of other countries change leaders quite frequently. The Queen has been head of state for so many yrars now that her face is synonomous with Britain I suppose.

We've hardly seen anything of her though. We haven't seen all the nominations of her either. Sophie said she felt she was fake. I wish they had shown us Marcus's nomination as he spoke about her alot for 30 minutes or so.

But we didn`t see his nominations so how do you know this?

They said on the HLs that Marcus after so many minutes deliberation picked Hira. I think it was last week?

Jesus, she should be stopped from watching American TV...first the dodgy accent ( which thankfully is wearing off)....now the mawkish sentimentality that is totally out of proportion to the actual situation Roll Eyes

Yes she seems a nice person, but that was Vomit inducing Sick Sick Sick

They said 30 minutes deliberating over just Hira? I must have missed that.
