It appears that his mother left home when Marcus was just 15 years old. He has lived on his own ever since. He also never talks about his father. I was only reading earlier that he told Noirin that no-one remembered his birthdays when he was a child. Then a Sunday School friend gave him a chocolate bar for his birthday and he was so happy he waited two weeks before finally eating it. No wonder he asked Noirin for hugs, he just craves affection I think.
