He's probably being kept in a coma to maximise his recovery......he had successful surgery on two skull fractures. It's not uncommon to keep someone asleep in this situation, I really hope he'll be okay.

Well during this afternoon's race, the tyre has come off Alonso's car and bounced off the racetrack

No, that was Henry Surtees who was a Formula 2 driver. He died shortly after the accident.
