I agree.
Tom has to take responsibility for his own choices and decisions.
I thought he was nasty throughout his stay.
He even left with a parting shot which implied he was superior to all this and had better things to do.
I think his absence will be a benefit.

I think you actually have to be in there to realise how weird, claustraphobic, and unreal as opposed to RL to know what it's like in there,
