Dunno about it being Northern, but it was quite common when I was growing up. Alot of people didn't have much money and it was a cheap tea for the kids. My cousin used to have condensed milk on bread and butter with sugar on top of that
I love sweetened condensed milk on hot buttered toast LL...
My husband and kids think I am strange....

Boil it up in the can... it makes a great caramel topping, when my kids were babies I used to make baby formula into a stiff thick paste it tastes even better than condensed milk
.
Black Treacle butties are my guilty pleasure!(well one of them)
Never ever tried black treacle.
My mate used to have golden syrup ones.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm, bread & dripping!!!!!
Beef dripping or pork dripping?
Both delicious!!!!
Just remembered something else too ....we used to buy a french stick - scoop out all the bread from the middle and stuff it with chips and salt and vinegar.

Or get a french stick, put tomato puree on it, then cheese, and top with whatever takes your fancy and grill it - instant pizza!
