It's the quality not the number that are important.

Quite, although there are rumours elsewhere that he never actually completed his degree(s) at Edinburgh.
Now, I've absolutely no idea whether that's true or not but, as I've said earlier, I found his careful choice of wording very interesting: i.e. he pursued four degrees. As far as I'm aware, he has never actually claimed to have any degrees, never mind four...

I think they're so common these days that no-one thinks twice. Like LCD TVs, really. If you're young and you haven't got one then people think you're interesting and a bit radical, possibly even iconoclastic. Years ago, only about 5-6% went to university. Now it's something enormous.

Many years ago, we employed a new graduate as we were struggling to get experienced people. When he turned up, the woman chosen to hand-hold him for his first week told him we don't normally employ graduates. For days afterwards, he was strutting around talking very grandly until he suddenly realised that everyone in the department had at least one degree, some had MScs and a couple PhDs. Laugh

pmsl Laugh It annoys me a bit though, because she's reluctant to use her degree when seeking work. Still, she's in her mid-thirties and it's her choice but it's still a shame.

Once upon a time they would have a certain kudos, open doors etc. Not so much now.. and they don't necessarily offer the same advantages and boost up the ladder or cache that they did.
True! Also, my neighbour works at the travelodge, and one girl there (age 25 now) completed a psychology degree 2 years ago, and she is a travelodge receptionist. My neighbour has got 5 GCSEs and has the same job!. The girl couldn't get a suitable position although she tried to get one for about 6 months. Then she decided that her travelodge job was actually quite OK, and she is still doing it. Also, as Daniel said earlier, because so many are taking them now, it's going to get so that so many have got them, that they aren't particuarly a special achievement. Frowner

And NO university can teach common sense and good manners, and the university of life is the best one of all! Thumbs Up
