It was the crash recovery untick that sorted mine the most. Fingers crossed it sorts yours too! Big Grin

If it takes ages to load at start up...it maybe trying to update all the time...

Tools > Internet options > Advanced > Untick check for updates automatically....any updates can always be done manually with your windows updates. Wink

I work in the I.T. industry and know a lot of people who do. The vast majority use Firefox or more recently Apple's Safari. Few use IE. Link below.

Edit: I have not read through this thread, so if someone has also given this answer - sorry.

Sorry for the delay. Eastenders was on! Thanks for the link. I am going to try having Firefox sometime, but I'm not terribly techy, so think I'll try the IE8 first. As I understand it you can have both and switch between the two?

It's made a massive difference doing all that you suggested.
I found it very laggy at times, like you say possibly updating.
I feel happier about it now, so thanks again Valentine

I currently have IE6 on my pc which I've been quite happy with until recently, when I keep getting told that certain sites are not going to work properly with that version.

So I probably have to upgrade to IE 8. Has anyone had any problems when they've upgraded to this? Should I do it?

I know there's many who would say get Firefox or that other one, but I'm asking about IE8 at the moment.

Thanks for any advice you can give me. Thumbs Up

I don't know if you've read all the posts but Pesky Pixie posted the following which advised turning off some extras. It's apparently made a big difference to someone else who was having problems with 8, hope it helps somehow.

"Tools > Manage add ons > edit search providers and accelerators to what you want enable/disable.

Crash recovery = Tools > Internet options > Advanced > Untick enable automatic crash recovery.

Finally restart IE...it should work quicker.

i've tried the first option, but it's innefective as when it reloads it just resets itself to how it was before i will ty unticking the crash box though.and if that works i'll do the manula updates.

thanks rose. Hug

Re the first option...

Set your preferred search option (Google, Ask, Yahoo etc - pick one only) as your default provider then tick the box that says not to offer alternative search providers...the only provider I have left in my searches is Google...I have 'Ask' etc saved as bookmarks just in case I need them.

Soory to hijack the thread jenny, but as Chrome has been mentioned I have a question for swg....

How do I enable pop-ups for certain sites on Chrome? i was on River Island this morning and when i went to checkout it blocked the pop up and I don't know how to change it??? Helpppppppppppppppp! Valentine

Some banking sites wouldn't load when it first came out. Your browser sends a header containing the broswer details to the bank server when you try to load the page and some servers check the type of browser and display the page differently. IE8 wasn't recognised as a valid browser. I guess they've fixed that now it's more common but there might be sites which haven't.
