They are now saying that the first of the Swine Flu vaccines, produced in Europe by Novartis, will be distributed in about two months.

I was just wondering how you feel about such vaccines, and whether you’d feel safe receiving one. Would you choose to wait and see how other people react to the vaccine? Or would you be happy to receive it on faith?

If it's a flu vaccine then no probs.

I would have it, they have been making flu vaccine's for years, it's just adapting it to the different strains of a virus.

the thing about vaccinations is that they give you a small dose of what ever they are meant to stop and some people will get symptoms of the illness while others don't get any ! those that get symptoms will have a much milder form of the illness and will build up immunity to the full ilness either way a vaccination is a good thing

That's not the case with the 'flu vaccination. I asked my doctor because I worried that I would actually get the 'flu.

yes that's true. As this is a new strain I assume it's a different vaccine, just wonder how long it's been tested for

I asked too and got the same response - the thing about us receiving a small dose of the flu is an urban myth. Anyone who gets a flu-like bug after a flu jab is just unlucky and it is a different strain to the one the flu jab contains.

That's exactly what I was told. Smiler

I would, if I was advised by the medical authorities.

My guess is: it will be offered to the more vulnerable members of the public before the rest of us (pensioners / people with poor immune systems, etc)

I have told her, get to the doctors FIRST thing monday morning,

I'd phone the GP instead. If she goes to the doctors, one of two things could happen. She passes the virus on to other sickly people, or she contracts the virus from somebody at the doctors.

NHS advise that if a person suspects they have Swine Flu, to phone their GP. The GP will then determine over the phone if the person is likely to have it. Tamiflu is being prescribed on tickets now, and they say that relatives or friends (non-ill) of the patient should pick up the prescription for them.

•If you are then still concerned, stay at home and call your GP.
•If the GP confirms swine flu by telephone, they will give you a voucher reference number entitling you to antiviral medication.
•Give this number to a healthy friend or relative and ask them to pick up the antivirals for you from a designated local collection centre.

I will certainly have the vaccine when it becomes available. Both me and my husband have the 'flu vaccine every year because of our chronic health problems and I have only had a bad reaction once. I am staying indoors until the vaccine is available and only going out when I have hospital appointments, and my husband only leaves the house for essential shopping trips. It will be a huge relief to get vaccinated.

OHG, I hope that Pepsi recovers soon and that she only has a mild attack.

you cannot get flu from a flu vaccine as it contains no live virus....you may get mild flu like symptoms as your immune system reacts to the vaccine but thats it......

My daughter and her O/H were diagnosed with Swine Flu on Wednesday. He has had fairly mild syptoms - sore throat bit of a cough and a temp for 24 hours. My daughter is so poorly, raging temp every muscle in her body aching, vomiting, headache and now has a secondary chest infection and is on anti biotics. No doctors visit and she hasn't been given Tamiflu, although she did have the ordinary flu vac last year. I live at the other end of the country and I know that even if I was closer, I couldn't visit her. Really concerned. Anyone who says this virus is mild, all I can say is that there are some people who are being hit really hard Crying

i hope she is ok miss lippy, i have had the flu about 3 times in 25 years and when i get it i get it really bad...the whole process takes about 4 weeks from start to finish and during the second week i feel like i have been hit by a train, with all the swine flu problems at the moment i think a lot of people have forgotten how bad ordinary flu can be...my local health centre sent me a letter to get a flu jab as i was considered 'at risk' but every time i ring up they dont have any.......

Oh Rekaf, do make sure you get you flu vaccination this year. If your GP doesn't have any vaccine, I am sure you can buy it from boots (about £15.00) and get a nurse to give it to you. This year we will have the standard flu
about and swine flu, so you can get a double dose and that is the last thing anyone wants. Presumably you will be on the list of people give the swine flu vac when it is released in 2 weeks or so.

Just had a call from daughter's OH to say she will be admitted to hospital tomorrow if her chest infection has not improved. She is a normal, healthy 25 year old, I am so worried.
