In all seriousness I would never allow the Army to take kids (even though I personally have none) and I doubt any UK soldier would follow such an order regardless of the punishment. It was a little bit of a stretch to see all the military going along without a grumble.

The way I percieved the programme last night was that the soldiers children were safe from selection, although I could be completely mistaken as the bloody subtitles weren't available last night so I missed a lot of the dialogue. Mad

While I was watching the last two episodes it was constantly going through my mind that I hoped they would refuse to hand over ANY children and instead try and fight the aliens come what may.

Basically correct. The soldiers were told that if they didn't go along with it, their children would be selected. The implication being that they were otherwise safe.

the problem was (in the programme) that the aliens were not in orbit or anything so couldn't be found to nuke them. they just teleported one inot a tank thing in london to do dealings. if they killed that one it would be a declaration of war.
though it looked like they only killed that one anyway in the end Ninja

In the Torchwood programme, the aliens said give us 10% of your children, or you will ALL die. When Torchwood said no, they killed everyone in Thames House, even though they were in the tank. They are aliens and have powers that we have not.

What the "leaders" of the countries (not just the UK, mind) did was decide to take those in orphanges, immigrant facilities, etc. and couldn't get the numbers up and then decided to take those from council estates.

However, the leaders decided that their children would not be included, because they were "better".

My boys are well past puberty, so I would not be in that position, but my granddaughters would be. Maybe it has skewed my view, I don't know. I do think that it should be done by lottery and those with just one child would be excluded - much as those with one son were excluded from the draft.

I still think the aliens could do with some cognitive behavioural therapy to get to route of their drug problem - as it's obviously something in their childhood that's made them like this Nod

(for those that didn't see the programme - the aliens took children in 1965 and used them like a drug - getting a high from them)

Seriously though I could not for one minute believe that the army would be such drones and agree to round up so many children willingly to give up to the aliens without having a moral conscience and fighting back Confused

I doubt know, pengy. "Just following orders" is the mantra of the military drones. It was clear when the special unit went out to assinate Jack and the others of Torchwood. It took awhile for the woman commander to figure it out that Torchwood was the only thing that could save them.

It has caused us and probably a lot more people, to think about what the government are doing to "protect" us, but are really protecting their own.

whatever peoples feelings on the subject it's certainly food for thought and although I doubt aliens are gonna arrive soon, if people had to be sacrificed in another scenario i.e. world wide famine, it makes you wonder just what our Government would agree to Nod

I would imagine that it would simply be a case of spinning them a believable "us and them" story, then setting them loose myself.

The military are not trained to be free thinkers, they are conditioned to obey....as long as they were sent a safe distance from their own communities I doubt if there would be problems . Frowner
