The year sixes from the school where my mum works went to Wales yesterday for a leavers day out. The idiotic teachers that went with them (including the headteacher) sat on the beach sunbathing while the kids played on the rocks in the sea...big wave came dragging them into the sea. One girl is a right mess having hit her head and leg on the rocks she had to be taken to hospital and other kids had to be taken for swallowing water. The lifeboat had to be sent out to rescue them and all the while these teachers were clueless!

That is so so wrong on every level as a teacher.
I work for yr 6 also and believe me, we went to the beach in May for a project and every child was accounted for all the time.
If I was a parent of those kids, I would go ballistic at the school!

but surely with all these health and safety rules we have, a risk assessment should have been taken as soon as they hit the beach,,crikey, I do risk assessments all the time with the nieces when we go to the beach and I aint no teacher even!

a majority of school trips go well, its only the mistakes that make the news so try not to worry too much

I would imagine it depend how many teachers were supervising the children and how many were sunbathing and how many were getting icecreams etc.
OMG!! That is awful! Idiot teachers and I thought I was worried yesterday... My youngest went to The London Dungeons, with her year. Im down town with her sis in a clothes shop and she calls me to tell me "we're lost"! Luckily, she was with 6 other mates. Had come out of the gift shop and totally lost there way, came OUT of the Dungeons and couldnt find the teachers! Luckily, all was ok within 10 minutes, but what happened at your School is unacceptable!

Yeah thats the one.
It was 6 teachers for 44 kids...above the ratio but still not good.
They shouldn't have even been near the sea.
No risk assessment was done (this is known to be true as my mum would have had to type it if it was done)
The kids didn't even have swimming stuff with them.
All I see from this story is a bunch of stupid kids, who will not improve as they are being taught by stupid teachers.
If i take my own kids or nieces nephews to beach i am on red alert especailly maybe more so with someone esles child
I work in school as well and you have to be on alert at all times the kids sometimes think your a killjoy but they realise you are only looking out for them

Having worked at sea for half my life, and having lived no further than 200 yards from it all my life. It really pisses me off when people don't respect it or think when they are near or on it. It also pisses me off when the lifeboats and helicopter rescues are used for instances when the people involved so obviously should have known better.
Personally I think there should be a stupidity tax, or one off charge to compensate the lifeboats/rescue services when they are called out to ENDANGER THEIR OWN LIVES saving others who should have known better.
I just hope all the kids are ok.

When my daughter's class went to France, the children were allowed to wander anywhere, in twos, whilst the teachers and helpers went to the pub!

Visitors from inland treat the sea like a large swimming pool. It is not. People jumping off piers and walking on weed covered groynes. Turning their back on breaking waves. Not understanding undercurrents or tides. There was a new years reveller died a year or so ago on new years eve, typical case. At first they said he was swept out to see. I was suspicious when they said they had his clothes and true enough it came out that he decided to go for a swim and had been drinking. In seas of that temperature you will last 5 minutes if you are lucky. Maybe 10 if you are a bloody good swimmer. You will never get back to shore.
At least the media didnt blame it on a "freak wave" this time. That is one term that particularly annoys me.
I contribute towards the RNLI which isnt funded by the government or tax at all and saves 1000's of lives like these children because it happens so damn much. Pop a few quid in for the guys who saved these kids and contribute their time for free.

Yeah, our (Torbay & Dartmouth) Lifeboat was called out yesterday as 6 idiots got blown out to sea in an inflatable dinghy. They were 3 miles offshore by the time the lifeboat got to them. And then they found it was only a two man boat
But IMHO the worst people are usually the rich yacht owners who just go to sea in any weather without any prior training or seamanship knowledge whatsoever. Why on earth there is still no licence system for boating in the UK, is completely beyond me.
I dont know who in their right mind would consider putting to sea without taking a captaincy course.

Well the good news is that the insurance companies are forcing peoples hands. They are refusing to insure people that are not licenced. And the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) are pushing for a similar system to the French, German and Spanish one.

We had a very rich muppet come in the pub and brag about how he was having his boat taken to Spain by trailer at a cost of ÂĢ4,000 (ermmmm why not sail it? lol) to go in a new Marina. Anyway when I asked him if he had a licence or yachtmasters and he replied NO! He was gutted to find that once he got there to meet his boat he couldn't even take it out the marina because he wasn't licenced. He went white as a sheet and went even more pale when the guy next to me who is a yachtsmaster examiner confirmed what I said to be true. We were absolutely pissing ourselves.
