cuckoo clock for my birthday (i know it is sad but Ive always wanted one!) We have put it up on the wall, but the 2 chains are almost touching the floor! I am worried my cats are gonna go for it and wreck it. Is it meant to be like yhis. The instructions are very basic and dont say. Ive looked it up on google! Does anyone know if the weights come down, thereby moving the chains up, as the clocks mechanism works? Very puzzled!

Some chains are long, some are short. It is all about the design and the style. You could shorten your chains if you want to.

LOL
that reminds me of a Tressy I had as a kid,
You could stick this tool in her back and make her hair grow or shrink.
Lot easier than going to the hairdressers
HAha SO funny! Made me laugh out loud!!! My daughters asked what Im laughing out!! The "getting on your wick" bitYou can silence the cuckoo on mine tho!quote:Originally posted by Sunnie:

I remember Pippa too but never had one.
I had a look at that website Totts, it doesn't look like you can shorten the weights does it?
Ask at the jewellers to see - or phone the manufacturers.

Glad it made you smile, all true though.
I remember they are used to help the clock keep time...about all i can remember lol
I have a cuckoo clock with long chains.
But i'ts just an ornament as I got fed up of it cuckooing. lol
I just wrapped the chain up and place them on top of the cuckoo as the cats would play with the chain.
If you shorten the chain you might be having to wind up all the time.

No not yet! But it's a battery one and only trumpets during daylight hours - at night it goes to bye byes.
*** runs into thread, yanks LMS's chain, and runs out again ***

That's good then.
We've had a white cuckoo clock for over 30 years and we love it. The chains won't touch the floor if you don't wind all the way. It will keep the chains away from the cats but you will need to wind 2 or 3 times a day. The weights come down and the chain goes up so when it needs winding the chains are right at the top and the weights are at the bottom. Hope that's clear, and I hope it doesn't get on your wick
The cats might leave the chains alone once they get used to it.
Or just spray some water on them when they touch the chains.
Mine was a pressie from switzerland.

Seen those ones on ebay, they do all sorts of animals dont they? Some cuckoo clocks are really ugly, but those are cute. Mines cute too. If you go to the "Danbury mint " website, type in "cuckoo clocks" and then go down to the "edelweiss" one, thats mine!!! Im sure you cant w8 to see it!!!!quote:Originally posted by Soozy woo:

Oh, thanks Squiggle. I thought that was it, but it never said anything in the instructions. No wonder they tell you to hang it 6 and a half feet from the floor!!!. OMG! Ive just looked at it and the weights have come down a couple of inches already! How exactly do you wind them then?quote:Originally posted by squiggle:

My girl cat is still scared of anything that sprays, coz of when she was a kitten and we sprayed her with a water spray when she kept scratching up the wallpaper etc! She only has to hear the lid come off an aerosol and shes off hiding! Bless!quote:Originally posted by WILDER X:

You just grab the top of each chain, which has a little ring on it, and carefully and smoothly pull it and the weight goes up. If you don't pull the chain all the way down but just until the weight is about half and half with the chain they will both be out of the way of the floor.

Just let her hear the noise of the spray bottle and she will eventually know not to touch the clock chains.
Thankyou So simple! Why dont they tell you that on the insructions? Perhaps Im just really thick! You should hear the language when im putting flatpack stuff together!!!!quote:Originally posted by squiggle:quote:Originally posted by Little Miss Spurs:Oh, thanks Squiggle. The instructions for our cuckoo clock were translated from the Swiss. They are quite funny and I still have problems when trying to adjust the timing (faster or slower) of pushing up the little slider or pushing down. There again I am easily confused
Normally one of the chains is for the cuckoo and the other chain is for 'wind up'. My mum had a cuckoo clock and I loved it, got used to the cuckoo and didn't notice it. Sadly the poor cuckoo clock has now gone to clock heaven, due to my nephew swinging on it to see that it was attached to the wall securely enough!
Mine does need adjusting; Its saying 7.35, and its 7.15! Have to sort that out! My instructions were in 5 languages, but it was very funny "English"; kept using the words; "herewith" and "hereafter"!!!quote:Originally posted by squiggle:quote:Originally posted by Little Miss Spurs:Thankyou So simple! Just hope my cats dont have the same idea!! Ive seen them looking it up and down already! They'll wait till Im out the little buggers! Like a few weeks back, my daughters b/f got me some lovely tulips (my fave flowers) for my birthday. A massive bouquet. I put them in a vase, they were fine all weekend, when we were all at home; Went to school/work Monday and came home to find they'd eaten them all!!!! Only the stalks were left! Anyone'd think I didnt feed them!quote:Originally posted by shar69:

Do not panic! Because they are clockwork, I know it sounds funny but that's what they are, they take a little bit of fine tuning. Keep adjusting, and if you see that its slowing then you're on the right track. It might even be down to a millimetre one way or the other in the end. Good luck.
PS I should add that you will just have to listen to it, when it cuckoos is it gaining slightly less fast than it did, or not.
erm... not sure. Will have to keep an eye on it!quote:Originally posted by squiggle:quote:Originally posted by Little Miss Spurs:No idea, Im still working out the clock which keeps gaining time!
