I believe it to be optional at the mo...but give it time.

There will be people who dont have much money Lecs, who think i better get it now while its cheap, before you know it you will have to have one.

I can't imagine why anyone would voluntarily shell out £30 at this point .... (apart from the civil liberties issues and the incompetence of the government in managing IT projects which in themselves mean I'd not be at all happy) .... I mean why would they?
maybe she'll give out a free telly with every one and just put it on expenses

Isn't it £30 for the card and a £30 administration fee? I'm sure I read that somewhere last week.

In the article quoted it says costs will be capped at £30 for 2 years, then individuals will have to pay extra - estimated to take the cost to £60.

I think there is a general wish to vote against this lot or refuse to be ID’d just to send a message - never mind the rights or wrongs of ID cards.

The only way this is going to be a success for the government is if people are forced to show ID when say, registering for a doctor, booking an appointment at hospital etc. I don’t know if the government are going to (or have already) colluded with business and service providers on this as I have taken little notice of it so far.

Nor have I seen any publicity about it as I go about my travels but then again I walk around with my head in the clouds anyway

I think I would need ID to get this ID card in the form of a birth certificate and I’m not sure where that is and getting a copy will be an additional cost for people who have lost their BCs.

IF it contained useful info such as blood type and organ donor preferences, next-of-kin etc it may have some merit but the cost should not be entirely borne by the public.

AND what if it contains data that is subject to change like an address, number of children etc? It will need renewing.

ID cards are going to be introduced stealthily,no doubt.I dont drive and I don't have a valid passport,but I'm increasingly asked for photo ID for anything from purchasing tickets to getting a document signed by my solicitor!I missed out on tickets for Reading Festival last year because I couldnt produce photo ID...FFS was only buying one ticket..was hardly going to make a fortune on chuffing ebay out of it :

Has anyone heard of UK Biobank, operated in conjunction with the NHS? They're recruiting at this very moment by targetted mail for people to take part. They collect DNA samples as part of the long-term study and access your NHS medical records.

If the government, as I suspect, have a long term goal of collecting DNA samples from every citizen then here's the start of future commercial exploitation of DNA I reckon.
