if they have or expect a problem they will turn up with the police to help intimidate you but they cant come in unless you invite them in, of course if they speak to you and you dont let them in then in their eyes you probably have something to hide so assume you are guilty of something, a bit like tv lisencing.

i have a lot of dealings with social workers, some are great, others have some kind of god complex because what they decide goes, if you get one of those then they will happily lie to get the outcome they want so in all circumstances its best to assume that the social worker you speak to is going to be one of that type and whatever you do make sure you record any interaction between you and them just so there can be no "misunderstandings" at a future date when you suddenly appear to have been someone completely different to who you realy are.

the advice to have some kind of representation or an independent witness present also helps.

Sorry but that made me laugh Laugh

They seem to have all sorts of powers these day, which they choose to use when it suits them. I mean what about when they took that poor old woman out of her home and took her back to the Care Home? They took police and a battering ram with them and then threw a towel over the poor woman's head - all this against the wishes of her family Mad

id bloody love a social worker. i dont know why i dont have one Eeker apparently if i had a social worker i could be getting all sorts of weekends away and play schemes for lil gyps. not to mention help from behaviour teams and god knows what else. The families i know who have dealings with them for disabled kids point of view are really pleased with what their social worker can pull off for them.

Social workers have no medical training, and although they should have been more observant in their dealings with Baby P surely it is the doctors at the hospital who should have picked up on his injuries. He had been to hospital 35 times in his short life.

In my own experiance social workers are rubbish! My sister had one after a fight with my mum. She requested to be taken away but the treatment she recieved was so poor she returned after a week. I was apointed a social worker when i was 15 after my mum broke my nose. She would come vistit once a week to act as a negotiator between myself and my parents. She was useless. Nothing changed and for me things just got worse. My mum and dad would just put on a smile and play happy families. I also had a meeting with her away from my family once a week which often ment being taken out of school which was very embarassing. In the end i gave up and stopped turning up to meetings. No follow up was ever made.

Awww Sexy Hug Frowner. In response to the OP I don't know as i've luckily never had any experience with them but have seen stuff on TV etc.

contact your local c.a.b they can help, they will be able to tell you all you need to know and and advise on your rights. if a social worker turns up check their i.d and make a note of their name and what deptment they work for and what office they come from. sounds silly but getting any info later will be hard without this infomation.

Bit of a generalisation there from the uninformed. Have a read up and you will find that the root of current problems lies in the interference from a couple of papers way back when. Will Mary Warnock ever apologise?

Perhaps all social workers should give up and hand over the reins to Sun-readers. They know what makes everything tick.

I think the government badly need to do a recruitment drive of some sort for social work, try and make the job a bit more appealing to a wider spectrum.

I used to work in training (NHS, I work for the NHS now but in a different dept.) and we hired out training space to social work and it has to be said that, while the majority of the folk training were decent enough types, they really weren’t the brightest (when compared to the folk I met and chatted to from other ‘care’ vocations who also used the training centre).

The job also seems to attract a lot of people who have been through the care system themselves, they all said they wanted to make a difference but having been through the system doesn’t necessarily mean they are right for the job (and btw I don’t mean having been in care equals not very bright, two separate observations).

And what gives you the notion that I'm uninformed? I may have been scarred by these scum before, but that's my business, not yours. Good Day.

Having being married to a quite senior social worker for many a year, one who had the nouse to get out when the changes came, and people started messing with the system, I can assure you that as many people on that side were scarred too. Not that they would ever refer to their clients as scum mind.

thanks all for your replies. I posted late last night as I had a visit from TWO social workers out of the blue yesterday and as the day wore on I got madder and madder about it!!!

I have nothing to hide, so I'll enlighten u's a little bit.

As many of you know I have a severely disabled daughter. She is 18 and at a special college. Because of her disability she has a social worker. In the past week and half she has hardly been into college (because I had injured myself lifting her). The college were aware of this.

Anyhow, as I say, TWO S.Ws came out yesterday to question me about her absence. One was the regular SW and the other one I didnt know her name or anything (still dont) - and she didnt know mine.

As I said, once they went, as the day went on I was growing more and more mad about it. Thinking about baby P, Victoria Clmbie et al - I was FURIOUS that they were knocking on MY door when there are children being battered as I type.

I don't think we can do without good social workers and I am sure there are quite alot. It is the dead wood we need to flush out and get rid of - from the bottom up.

I agree except I would start at the top. Those on the ground are normally fighting on two fronts. Those they are wanting/trying to help and their so called superiors who are to busy feathering their own nest to be concerned about those below.

i agree top down would be a better place to start.

as i said i've had loads of dealings with social workers and i've met good and bad, the good ones are concerned but have too much workload to be able to do their jobs properly, the bad ones have their own ideas and unless you happen to agree with them they can cause all sorts of problems.

Problem with TV/media coverage is that they only show the bad, never the good. Thousands of children/families are helped by social workers every day. Sometimes they get it wrong, some are not v good at their jobs- a bit like any profession. Most are doing an almost impossible job, with their hands tied behind their backs due to lack of resources/impossible workloads. I'm always puzzled as to why social workers who work for the local authority are seen in such a negative light when people generally think that the NSPCC are wondeful..now what is the profession of NSPCC staff again???....Errr, that's right, they're social workers, but with much better resources, better terms and conditions, lower caseloads etc. etc. etc.
