There's lots of British classics to choose from, let's say The Dambusters and Lawrence of Arabia.

And I would also include Went The Day Well, which is the most different of all the 1940's British war films.

Oh yeah i forgot about the brilliant Throne Of Blood, Havent seen Ran and Ivans Childhood is great but not one of my faves

Forgot about Dambusters as well, Lawrence Of Arabia is very good, but i dont love it as much as most people do

A postscript to my earlier posting for anyone who is interested.

Throne of Blood is Kurosawa's version of Macbeth. Don't be put off by the title which sounds as if the film is some low budget horror film, it's probably the best Shakespeare film made.

Ran is also by Kurosawa and is his version of King Lear.

Ivan's Childhood was the first key film from Andrei Tarkovsky.

Pure escapism for me. Takes me back to the days when every boy played with action men in WWII uniforms, built airfix messerschmitts, read victor and warlord and dreamt of running about with a sten gun *makes machine gun noise* pulling out the pin with our teeth and hurling a pinapple *makes loud explosion noise* into a german machine gun nest.
