The answer to that question depends upon what you consider to be the definition of 'art'.
How do you descibe art. Can anyone?
Art would seem to be a form of expression, it can come in myriad guises and forms,it has no boundaries, it can be brutal or kind, it obeys no rules, it may ask no questions or it may provide no answers, it can be beautiful or grotesque, it asks nothing other than to be acknowleged, it can make you laugh or make you cry, it can empty your heart or fill your soul, it has no practical use and has no intrinsic value and as such it is what seperates human beings from every other living thing on the planet, maybe, I rambled a bit there.
I have to agree with your post despite the fact I feel that some artists and/or their promoters use this as justification to take the proverbial e.g unmade bed, pile of bricks etc.
So if I accept your definition (which I find it difficult not to) do I have to accept a pile of bricks as being art as opposed to building materials ?
I have to agree with what you say. I would go further and suggest that so called 'modern art' is a form of elitism. In homes up and down the country we have people with works of art in their homes, prints of paintings from Monet, Jack Vetrianno and countless others, the so called traditional stuff. Now imagine yourself to be some arty type who sees the working class enjoying art, not good for the elite image, for elitism is for the favoured few and to preserve this they must appreciate something that they know 99.9% of the population will consider rubbish, unmade bed, blue tac on a wall, light switch going on and off, sheep in formaldahyde,
and coupled to it is the emporers new clothes syndrome, if you dont see it, you are a fool.
As a footnote, Andy Warhol was asked for his definition of art, his reply "whatever you can get away with "
