It always has been depressing - imo it's just something to watch.
I do only watch the three - Emmerdale, Corrie and EE.Having said that I do think our soaps are far better than some of the stuff I've had to endure abroad.
Apart from 'gangsters' that don't swear in EE for example we do trey to keep it/them as real as possible during their time slots. Try going to my MIL's in Turkey, their version of Deal or no Deals is on at 9pm-ish for 2hours, drawn out to say the least! Don't start me on their late night version of 'Come dine with me'! College Lecturer is a great job, as you get joy out of seeing the students acheiving their qualifications. I know us Students can moan at times about the Lecturer
