I have a theory about that.

I believe that socks are the larval form of wire coathangers. Here's how it works...
A sock is the immature form of a wire coathanger (like a caterpillar is to a butterfly). When you put socks in the washing machine, where it's dark, and full of warm water, some of them will feel the urge to pupate...so they slide off down the pipes, make their way to the back of your wardrobe, and spin a cocoon. When they're ready, they break out of the cocoon, a fully formed wire coathanger, and hang themselves on the rail...which is why there always seems to be more wire coathangers in your wardrobe than you remember putting in there.
And you know how, when you open your wardrobe, there's always at least two coathangers tangled together? They're mating...and when they're done, their offspring (socks, remember) slip off to the back of the airing cupboard to mature a little...so every now and then, you'll find a "missing" sock tucked in with the duvet covers and towels...and start the process all over again...
