MJ was a genius... You might not have liked him but he had millions of fans... Most of the modern day acts are inspired by him matterfact there has not been any musical growth in modern day pop music since Michael...

His back catalogue is impressive and I think he had one of the most beautiful underrated voices in the industry... He was also a great song writer....

I agree that he had millions of fans and was one of the best dancers of all time.
The rest is hyperbole.

70m album sales on one album and an impressive back catalogue of fantastic music is not hyperbole. Girls aloud is hyperbole. Mad

I'm afraid that the above comments I refered to are hyperbole. I know how it is when your musical hero dies. Mine did in 1993. I know what it means. Fraternal Hug and Valentine to MJ fans but let's not get carried away.

Carried away? He was a musical genius, even if you're not a MJ fan his contribution cannot be denied. Genius, legend and all the acolaides attributed to him and his music is deserved. Hyperbole, not.

Musical genius? Quincy Jones.

Frank Zappa?

Yes! As well as being a musical genius, he made some total and utter carp too. I can't say that I agreed with everything he wrote either. These people all have their faults and foibles just as any other. They aren't Gods but they do entertain. Anyway back to MJ. It's his day not Frank's.

Still very sad all the greats are leaving us Frowner...

Karma will be hitting these people soon... I still see some very recent negative comments on youtube Disappointed Frowner

If people can try and leave all the other stuff behind (difficult I know especially if true), and just respect and accept that the world has lost an musical genius.

Yes you're right Lass, that is who I am remembering this morning that sweet faced boy with the voice of an angel who was sucked into the giant mincing machine called fame.

Exactly squiggle. Musical genius? Yes.

hey pretty, you've summed up what a lot of his fans thought and loved about him. he had a beautiful voice. where as another musical genius may have guitar, piano or composing talents, a voice is just like an instrument, which he used to it's fullest potential.

I was a little boy when Elvis died. That was my first celebrity death! At least the one I can remember anyway.

A day never to be forgotten. No internet then, or FB or Twitter, so it was just word of mouth and the media. I remember it as though it were yesterday. The death of John Lennon too Nod

I agree with you, his voice was just so angelic and distinct and so underrated... Gosh I have been crying all day...

And all her own hair (I believe) no tacky extensions in those days. She was an icon.

Farrah Fawcett was, indeed, a very beautiful vivacious woman and her passing is so very sad. I always tried to emulate her tousled curls.

She was also a very fine film actress and made some very dramatic movies.

My sister was totally bereft when Elvis died. She really was inconsolable.
as is my sister today she is a massive MJ fan and this is how I became aware of his music through her.

OH says he came home and his Mum was sobbing her heart out, he immediately burst into tears at the sight of her, she could barely get her words out but managed to say "Elvis is dead" to which he promptly picked his ball up and went back out, he would have just turned 5.

I remember Freddie Mercury dying, I was 10 and then of course Diana, both of those times as last night was, you will always remember where you were and what you were doing.

When I started this thread it was not meant the MJ did not deserve the coverage it was that Farrah Fawcett deserved at least a mention. Yes her fight has been ongoing but to lose that fight is tragic and she too has family and friends who are mourning.

I did think that, as her family you would have wanted to see her tributes and that has been overshadowed, there are still pages devoted to her in the papers but she would have been front page and now she is about six pages in.

do i remember 1977! shouldn't mention it, but we associate the craziest things with death. elvis was born the same year as my mum. my bruv shared the same birthday month, a few days apart. elvis last concert (26th june) was within days of bruvs passing, as did elvis on 16th august. doesn't mean much, but something that has stayed with me.

Eeker how weird 26th june today Ghost

love this tribute!

I didn't see any news yesterday and had a call this morning telling me that Michael had passed. I was really shocked.

I had no idea that Farrah Fawcett had also died. She was a beautiful lady, and an icon to a generation.

My thoughts and prayers are for both of them and their families.

I don't suppose any of their families will be worrying about press coverage right now. They'll have enough to deal with.

God bless Hug
Towno :)
