I know what you mean and I know what Crunchy means.
I'm not sure what Dean means, as whatever definition of anniversary you use, I can't see it being a factor of 10.
I will agree to it being a celebration of the 10th series, but that's as far as I will go!

ANNIVERSARY
1. The yearly recurrence of the date of a past event: the tenth anniversary of their marriage. - The one that Crunchy Nut and some others seem to believe is the only definition that exists.
2. The celebration or commemoration of such a date. - APPLIES to BB.
3. Returning or recurring each year; annual. - ALSO APPLIES to BB.
Therefore the word anniversay is the right word to use and this is the 10th anniversary of Big Brother.
yep,
i gotta agree with that explaination

rachel-is that you
To give a similar example which should hopefully clear this up once and for all...
Anyone follow wrestling? The last Wrestlemania (which is an annual event, just like Big Brother) was Wrestlemania 25.
They called this the 25th anniversary of Wrestlemania, in the same way one might call BB10 the tenth anniversary of BB.
The below is from an article about the event...
"However, as a result of WrestleMania's continuous chronology, WrestleMania 25 was actually the 24th anniversary of the event."
There was even a big discussion about this on Wikipedia, because people are sad enough to argue about it for weeks on end.
The below is an extract....
"the official name was 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania and like 13, 2000, X-Seven, and X8 which all have articles titled with their official title it should be 25th Anniversary even if we all know it was the 24th anniversary."
"Support moving it, as due to a lack of math knowledge in the WWE they fail to realise it is actually the 24th anniversary."
"technically next year is the 25th anniversary and this IS Wrestlemania XXV not The 25th Anniversary of Wrestlemania despite what WWE says."
"Support WrestleMania XXV -- per WP:Naming conflict. 1)It wasn't the 25th anniversary of WrestleMania"
I thank you.

Lizzie... I see what you're saying in how what I have explained not pertaining to 10 specifically so I'll elaborate.
Crunchy has a problem with seeing how this is the 10th ANNIVERSARY as opposed to it being the 10th SHOW as you've pointed out that everyone clearly knows it has been 10 shows.
So therefore the argument should really have been is anniversary the right word to use, in this situation.
There have been 10 SHOWS - The definitions I've pointed out which pertain to BB, pertain to it in A: The sense of shows aired ergo it's had 10 shows aired. Therefore the phrase "BB's 10th ANNIVERSARY" - IS CORRECT.

Well no 3. refers to returning or recurring, which would not include the first date, and so would make it the ninth anniversary.
No 2. would maybe work, if you specify it as celebration.
Commemoration involves celebrating or honouring a memory, which would also suggest a past event, hence celebrating the year before on the first anniversary, so would also make it the ninth anniversary.

3 I'll retract but 2 can work out in both our explainations...
Whatever lol I don't actually care if it is or isn't. I was just trying to be helpful and almost everyone here has valid points because it is an awkward argument and therefore we're all right and all wrong.

I shall just agree to call it the 3285th one day anniversary of the start of BBUK.
I will not move further, dammit!!

Works for me... Cooookie?
When I work anniversaries out I do it the long way, like this:
2000 - First Show
2001 - Second Show
2002 - Third Show
2003 - Fourth Show
2004 - Fifth Show
2005 - Sixth Show
2006 - Seventh Show
2007 - Eighth Show
2008 - Ninth Show
2009 - Tenth Show
I know it's the long way to do it, but it proves that 2009 is the tenth anniversary of the show, if the first one was in 2000.
Hope this helps. NB - I did not pass mathematics at school .....

Oh noes!
So how come the WW2 veterans have just commemorated the 65th annivesary of the DD landings (which took place in 1944 btw)?
It happened 65 years ago, that's why - NOT 64.

I can see this debate lasting as long as the chicken washing....
So basically Dean you think that something can have an anniversary the very first day it happens.
That's like a TV show starting tonight and me celebrating its first anniversary. How silly is that?
You are correct with your definitions, but it still doesn't make it right that it's the 10th anniversary.
If we're doing it in series' not years, then BB2 was still the first anniversary of Big Brother, not BB1.
No matter what anyone says, I can't for the life of me accept that it's the 10th anniversary, no matter how anyone tries to spin it. Celebration of 10 series' of BB, fair enough. But not 10th anniversary. It's the 9th anniversary, simple as that.

Anniversary is the wrong wording, but in fact overall this is the 10th anniversary of BB as it started in 1999

Awww Crunchy, I'm with you on this one - I guess we'd better just accept that they are never going to see it.

I was convinced it started in 1999 and was wondering why nobody else said it.
I know lol. But I want to try and make them see it It's my mission.quote:Originally posted by Moomin:quote:Originally posted by Crunchy Nuts:

BB1 UK started in 2000.
Also what a lot of people are missing is the fact that they are marking the exact date it started i.e. BB's birthday. Therefore there's no doubt about it that it is infact the 9th anniversary of BB starting on 17th July 2000.

Aye BBUK did, BB as a format started in 1999.
Even so 'anniversary' is still the wrong wording if thats what they are going to use for BBUK
