I would join freecycle if I could work it out.

just been trying to do that. god its a ball-ache. there is a charity called furniture project and they are completely full of sofas and the british heart foundation were advertising for furniture and electrical items and they didn't want it because it is not 'pristine'. grrrrr

My MIL got the charity "DEBRA" to take hers, so we phoned them but seemingly we are too far away ( we live about 6 miles away from MIL)

I feel the same as you, I hate that they are going to land fill. It makes me feel bad for buying new ones just cos I wanted a new colour!

I tried really hard to join freecycle when I wanted my futon picked up, but I seemed to go round and round in circles and eventually gave up.

Belle, check this list hun to see if there is a furniture recycling project near you

Or else stick a card in a shop window with a free if you collect message.
As a last resort stick a note on your front door and see if anyone knocks to ask about it.
My friend runs a recycling project in Hastings and they have a huge warehouse but even they get full up at times.
I love the furniture recycling projects - the one in Brighton is called Shabitat Big Grin

I had the same problem Belle, good cream leather suite that I only wanted rid of coz I hated having to clean it everyday Laugh but everyone either had one already or didn't want to have to pay to hire a van for the day to collect it. So I rang round all the local charities and the St Vincent's de Paul came and collected it and were very grateful so if you have them in your area give thema ring Thumbs Up

I'd try ringing the charities as said already. I give alot of stuff to charity unless I know someone who wants whatever it is.

Also, Freecycle, i can't work that out as much as i'd love to!

Could you not hold on to it a bit longer and advertise maybe in a local paper and / or shop windows etc?

Or maybe ebay? Just start the bids at 99p if you don't want anything for it, you'll get something on it at least, just make sure you add "buyer uplifts" in the postage & packing bit when listing

Try your local St Vincent De Paul Society, they don't sell furniture on for profit like the bigger charities as they give it straight to people in need. I had the same problem a few years ago. I had two matching sofas in excellent condition and a dining table. Oxfam took mine but the guy who came to collect it said he'd made about 10 calls to people's homes that morning and he hadn't accepted anything because it wasn't in a good enough condition. He made me feel as though he was doing me a favour by taking my stuff rather than the other way around. Mad I stopped donating furniture to charities after that and managed to get rid of a wardrobe, sofa & armchair on freecycle.

hi parrot.
beleive it or not I have already called most of them. some of them will only accept it if you take it to them (would need to hire a van) and others were not answering the phone, and derby furniture project and others are over-run with sofas.
I would love to hold on to it, but i need the room to put a kitchen in which my mum is donating me to put in my rental property when the lease comes to an end in 6 months. my mum cannot store the kitchen and they are ripping it out as i sit here typing.

maybe we have a ÂĢ700 worth bonfire. Frowner Mad

What's hard about joining a Freecycle group? Unless they differ from the one I joined. Yahoo groups, search freecycle, then select and join the group that is nearest to where you live. Once joined you should be able to post an item either by going on to the yahoo group freecycle website or send an email to the freecycle group.
I find it easier to opt for reading the emails online only. That way your inbox is not inundated with useless emails.

You're not stupid lovely BeerBelle! I can see what you're getting at. I have a yahoo email account so don't know if that makes any difference to replying. Hmmmmmm let me have a look round see if I can find anything to help. Nod

I am going to presume you are looking online at the Freecycle messages. You see one that catches your eye and click on it to open and read what's on offer. If it's just what you wanted you click on the Send Email shown under the advertiser's username on the right.

If you are going to put items on the board that you need to get rid of, click on the Post link under Messages on the left side. Type your item following your local freecycles format then send. People should then reply to you via the email address you opted to use when you joined Freecycle/Yahoo.

Does this help? I've noticed I'm not that good at explaining things I'm afraid. Frowner

only send messages to this group using the email address(es) you have
registered with Yahoo! Groups.

Ok! If you click on My Groups at the top right of the Freecycle group page then click on My Email Preferences you might be able to sort that there.
