I keep getting pop up alerts that I have a trojan wotsit....but I cant seem to get rid of it. I've done scans....sort of, they seem to freeze half way through. I'm pretty sure its important to get rid of it. TBH I'm a total computer****wit and I dont know what to do. I also seem to have a few anti thingy programmes - and I dont know which one works.

Help!

Or are you all going to run screaming cos I am infected??? Frowner

That is a very reasonable and generous response to being called a buggerhead, tbh! Laugh

Whoops, so I've just fallen for the oldest trick in the book then or something? Eeker

sometimes I really really hate computers. Disappointed

I'm running a scan now but I'm still getting urgent pop-up type things going on.

Sorry my computer just crashed again! Roll Eyes

And no its not when I am on any particular site (is this a tactful way of asking me if I look up dodgy porn? Big Grin )

And ooooh I'm not cross, its just the way I get on - I just havent found an appropriate 'tongue in cheek' smiley to convey that yet. Eeker

I have to go to bed now...please please please anyone that knows whats going on give me IDIOT PROOF instructions how to sort this for the morning. Proper idiot proof!

No, it doesn't just happen on dodgy porn pages. Some sites are "taken over" by other sites and up pop these "warnings" suggesting you "click here" to fix your puter.

But this doesn't sound like what is happening to you, especially if your computer has just crashed as well.

It sounds like it is your own system which is giving these warnings, but try and make sure whether it IS your system, and not just a popup thingy. Keep off the internet for a while and see if these warnings still come up.

If they do, then see if the warning gives you a name for this trojan, make a note of it, and then search the web for it. There are reputable sites which could give you instructions for getting rid of it.

A trojan horse virus is something that installs itself on your computer, usually from a webpage you've visited or by downloading and running a program that has been infected.

Because of firewalls and NAT routers, programs on the internet can't get into your computer. However, your computer can make connections out through firewalls and NAT routers, which is what your web browser does.

Trojan horse viruses are bad because they connect from your computer like a browser to somewhere on the internet to do bad things, like upload your webpage passwords file (like for hotmail, yahoo, banking sites) or use your computer to send viruses around.

What to do: First unplug your computer from the internet. Next, go on to another computer and download some anti-virus software from a reputable place. Here's one: http://free.avg.com Create a CD with the downloaded program on it. This is important as the virus may try to infect the anti-virus program too. Run the anti-virus program from the CD and hopefully it will kill the virus.

There's more to it than that as ideally you should boot the PC up from a bootable CD so that the virus program is not started automatically when the PC starts up from the hard drive but that might be enough up there.
