Can you remember making any lifting movements yesterday? Did you bend down and pick something up?

It could be as simple as picking up a pen.
Which part of your back hurts?

the pain seems to be in the middle of back to the left slightly
It could be a kidney infection or inflammation, ot it could just mean that you need a new bed or mattress.
Try a pain killer, like Panadol plus some gentle warmth (ie heated pad or warm hotwater bottle). See if that eases it. That might indicate you have strained a muscle. The pain of that can be agonising but will fade with warmth and rest and painkillers.
thanx for the advice guys
if the pain goes into your leg-it could be sciatica
i know cos i've got it and it drives me round the twist-it literally is a pain in the arse!
i have anti-inflammatory (sp) tablets and a painkiller called zapain..
and a hotwater bottle..

^^^ What she said.
(sorry I got called away)
it could just be the way you slept! but a warm bath can do wonders
You could have put your back out in your sleep...take ibuprofen or any other anti-inflammatory and see how it goes....or if its really bad go to the doctors...I did something similar years ago and the doctor gave me 5 tablets that were so strong that 3 did the trick...and I'd been bent over and unable to stand up (was in the right position to hoover though)
could just be your mattress, could have pulled something without knowing it yesterday, overexerted yaself yesterday or something.
Before putting anything heated on it you need to find out what is causing the pain.
My wife got serious back pain one morning. I dutifully ran out and got some heat pads, pain killers etc. When the doctor finally turned up and the wife explained what we had done he said 'Doesn't your husband like you'.
Heat was only inflaming the problem and we should have been putting ice on.
My sympathies.

If it's near you kidney area, go to the doctors...if it's lower and down into the buttock, more than likely sciatica, or muscular. The more you can move the more it won't sieze up, but that's easier said than done Painkillers and anti inflammatory will help. Hope it gets better soon, it bloody well hurts
Ibuphren, paracetomol and for the lord of fluff's sake, try not to sneeze.
i did something to my back a few months ago and was getting agonising twinges to the back and right - even thought it might be my gall bladder as the pain went right under my ribcage but painkillers and anti-inflammatories helped it go in a couple of weeks.
It was awful though - made me cry when it was really bad one night
Go to your docs

If it continues see your doctor first, but l recently discovered some brilliant tablets. Nurofen Plus which are Ibruprofen (anti inflamation) and Codeine (muscle relaxant) this is after seeing my doctor for the last 3 years and being prescribed all kinds for severe back ache, which never helped.
Deep heat helps Chicken.
Don't be tempted to have a hot bath - you may go into spasm when you try to get out of the bath. It is horrendous!!!!!
Have a hot shower and try to aim the shower head onto your back - it will be like a warming massage.

that happened to my mum recently she couldnt move for days
thanx for all the advice guys hopefully get better soon
Have no more advice than has already been said but hope you feel better soon - back ache is awful!
If you don't remember doing anything it most likely happened in your sleep. I get incredible back pain if I lay in bed too long or go into a deep sleep and don't move all night.
I remember straining a muscle in my armpit once by coughing
A guy who used to work for me punctured a lung sneezing once too....how...I dunno

pulled muscle maybe?
you don't need to pick up anything heavy, even moving the wrong way can pull a muscle.
Try some heat on it and get some co codamol from the chemist.
Good luck
