Anyone have one?

Older son is very keen to have one for uni - apparently it is faster and crashes less than a lappy, but I can't help noticing that it is a lot more money.
Has anyone any experience of using one, - it uses a different operating system ( I think Blush)If he saves work on a memory stick on that will he be able to use the stick in university computers if they are not Apple? What about Microsoft Office? Printer compatability?
I'm a bit ignorant so someone please help.
I'd hate him to take his Apple to uni and then for it not to be any use. Confused Smiler

That sounds hopeful.

But can work be transferred from that to an ordinary pc or laptop?

I can tell you more about it tomorrow once I've spoken to him about it and get more info for you.

He's off to an Arsenal match tonight so it will be pretty late when he gets back.

thanks, QS

I've got one... I heart it Blush

You can get Windows Office for Mac, but you'll have to pay for it - unless you can get it free as a student, I don't think so though Confused If you have that you can do stuff in MS Word on the mac, put it onto a memory stick and a Windows PC will read it fine. Otherwise you can get Open Office, which I think has the option to save in a windows format (.doc)

You do get a discount though on the Apple store if you are a student (20% I think). Thing is you have to be on the uni network to log into it... so it would probably be well worth him waiting til he actually starts uni before he buys one Nod

I've got a MacBook and it's ace. Thumbs Up

It took a LOT of getting used to after having always used a PC/Laptop previously though.

Everything about the MacBook is set up differently and looks completely different to a PC/Laptop as far as system layout is concerned but it's easy to get used to... now I'd never have anything else but a Mac.

It uses Safari web browser which is great, it is compatible with Microsoft Office, you have to buy the Mac version of this though which I think the student version is about ÂĢ70.

It is best to see what operating system your sons uni use as disley said though and check it is Mac compatible....a huge waste of money if it isn't!! Nod

Most things are now Mac friendly...when I first got mine 2 years ago it was a bit of a nightmare!!

Right, I am the proud owner of a MacBook pro, which I am typing on at the moment.

They are certainly good value for money, even the low-spec ones are quick and easy to use and a reasonable price.

You can get MS Office for the Mac but I prefer to use iWork which is cheaper and all the files are totally compatible between Mac and PC.

The memory sticks work fine - my little SD card which goes into my camera works equally well with both. And all the files are transferable between mac and PC.

Printer compatibility is fine - all major printer manufacturers make drivers for OS X which is the current Mac operating system - if you haven't kept the disk for your printer then should be able to load the software from their site.

It's top for designs and yeah, you have to update often and it costs more.

Love macs tho.

Ok, just got his email Moomin...so here goes...

Hi xxxxx

As you know Apple laptops are great.

There is absolutely no compatibility issues with any of the Microsoft suite of products, this includes Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Outlook or Project. All MS application work well on both platforms, and of course are backward compatible. In addition, most modern universities understand that Apple computers a on the increase, therefore most if not all of the educational software is supported on both platforms.

For more information of popular educational software, i.e. take a look here: http://store.apple.com/uk/brow..._landing?mco=MjM4NDQ
Or even here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.mspx

Ps: don’t forget your student discount.

Hope this helps

That's what I call speedy service.
He got the education discount, and a cheap ipod when he gets a rebate from Apple.

Now waiting for him to come home from a mates house where he spent last night to open it up.
I want to see it!!
