Many of the British relatives think he's either innocent, or at most a small pawn in a much larger conspiracy.

Most American relatives are extremely unhappy. However:
1) Culturally, the USA treats prisoners convicted of murder much more severely than the UK.
2) There has been very little coverage in the USA (compared with Scotland) of the new evidence in the case.
