It happened at a cashpoint near me. Apparently, people were generously spreading the word, so others could share their good fortune. Nobody told me!
Incidentally, the bank involved requested people return the cash but I doubt whether anyone did.

The only time I've ever had anything like that is when i went to take out £200 and the machine only gave me £120...I complained straight away and was told they'd check the machine at the end of the day and credit my account if necessary....they were as good as their word..BUT they credited the whole £200 back to me so i was £120 up! 
Happened around here too, the bloody thing was emptied within a couple of hours and I didn't know until it was empty

i once found £100 pound in 50 pound notes in the street best find i ever made .

That happened to me a few years ago. I made several withdrawals, but the bank eventually reclaimed all the money except for one transaction. 
I DID find what I thought was a pound lying on the pavement today though.
Turned out to be a beer bottle top baked into the street
