I am getting a new car next month and need advice

Right the problem is I dont know what one to get, I currently have a zafira 1.6, but I dont need a car that big anymore. The main thing I am looking for is that its economical on the petrol but it cant be too small cause all the lockettes have to fit in it (3 of them).

Now budget........well its a mobility car so the least deposit I have to put down the better,

Any advice welcome

Do lots of research. Beware that the small car you think is a bargain may actually be more expensive than a three year old mondeo. The price diference may cover the extra fuel. You get the extra comfort.

I have a Ford Fiesta, 02 plate (a blue one, haha) thats about as technical as I get but its lovely and compact. I take my god children out in it and the three of them fit in ok. I had two boys with booster seats a baby in a car seat last week. There wasn't much room for much else in the back but they fitted in safely and without trouble. Also fitted small bike and buggy in boot while we were going. Very cheap to run, lovely little car.

I have just traded in my 10 year old car for a shiny brand new Toyota Auris. That is about the size of an Astra but better quality. If you are looking for a smaller car the Toyota Yaris is deceptively big inside.

You may Laugh but Hyundai's are well economical, cheap to insure, cheap to run and very, very reliable!

We had an Atoz and in 2 years all we spent on it was for a new set of tyres and a set of wiper blades (it went through 2 MOTs without needing a penny spent on it)...it started first time every time and even after it had sat on the drive for 6 months unused when my husband got his taxi it started 1 st when he gave it to his mate.

There also more room in them than it looks from the outside.

yep a corsa is a bit small, I dont mind vauxhalls, The main thing is though the miles per gallon I do a lot of driving you see

i think you can get 1.4 astras got to be ok on juice i should think.

i have a skoda fabia hatchback and previous to that had a skoda felicia hatchback...loads of room for kids and shopping...easy and cheap to get parts...love the skoda

have you thought about a diesel? I've got the audi a3 2.0 tdi ( the golf has exactly the same engine but a bit cheaper and v reliable) I get at 46.5 mpg and I do alot of town driving. plus it goes like the wind!!!! lol

i love cars i got a 1.8 mgzr 160 and it goes like s**t, its 04 plate and its only done 18,000 miles ive had it 4 years lol and would love a change but cant find anything to replace it.

I'm sorry to say this.... but I had one of them for six months. I was mocked mercilessly for having 'an old person's car' but I defended it as it WAS reliable. However the day I drew up at traffic lights in it and got a big smile from the toothless 80 year old guy in the woolie hat in the next lane who was driving an IDENTICAL one, I knew it had to go.

I used to have an Auris too, huge boot and not bad to drive

Agree re the Audi, I had an A3 TDi last year. Did about 700 miles a week no problems and great on the fuel too. Plus they're dead nice to you when you take it in the Audi garage for a service, you get tea and everything

I've got a Honda Civic 2.2 cdti at the moment. Much faster than the Audi, just doesn't look as nice, and about the same MPG.

Astra Diesels are not bad either

I've had company cars for years so have driven loads, my all time favourites were a Mazda 6 and a Merc. But they're not great for town driving.

Astra's are good on fuel ecomony, my husband has a 54 reg Astra 1.7TDi estate and it's brilliant on diesel, and he being a taxi driver does mostly town driving.

I have a 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa which is fantastic on petrol, 10.00 lasts me nearly a fortnight, but I haven't done a lot of driving lately. Corsa's are deceptive, because they look small but my old 4 door Corsa was quite roomy. I now have a two door and absolutely love it, wouldn't have another car, well except for a 59 reg Corsa!!

since its a motobility car so you dont have to worry about depreciation or it falling apart from rust in 5 years you might look at the smaller fiats, they are cheap to run, and its good enough for m.shumaker (sp?) and james may. if you plan on buying the car after your 3 years then a toyota or mazda or vw is probably the best bet because of their reliability.

that said i'm probably not the best person to advise on small, practical, family cars.

Locks I too am getting a new mobility car next month. I've gone for the new Renault Megan and just to look a little more jazzy have gone for the coupe. But the deposit was low and the comfort in Renaults are always good. The Clio is another option, they are much bigger than they look and are economical to run. This car will be my 4th Renault. When I've shopped around I have found other similar models less luxurious. Hope this helps..
