Alternatively, perhaps, maybe her relationship with her Mum isn't, in reality, that good and the failure to send even a short message just hit home.

It DID seem a real issue for her at the time and I felt a wee (very wee) bit sorry at first but she milked it for way too long with a total lack of sensitivity for her friend's feelings or HMs boredom levels. No wonder, in the end, they laughed; it became laughably ridiculous.
