It`s a "grave accent".
Grave to rhyme with suave or carve.
Used in French grammar over some vowels.

That French accent thingy is different altogether... PatÃĐ....<<<To get the accent over the "e" I press ctrl and alt whilst pressing the "e"....I thought it was the same on all keyboards.
ctrl+alt+e=ÃĐ
Doing it the other way you end up with Pat`e...or Pate`

Probably.
When handwriting I'd use ' as a single quote..obviously there is the double "...and I would say that ` is an apostrophe but I don't like the gap when typed.
Xochiquetzal, what if you get a burning desire to make a post about BeyoncÃĐ eating patÃĐ whilst playing PokÃĐmon in a cafÃĐ?
The accent on patÃĐ is an acute accent, ` that is a grave slopes the other way as in derriÃĻre.quote:Originally posted by electric6:

Hello.
Just wanted to ask a question. Why do some of you use the back to front apostrophe thingy and not the one everyone else uses?
Ta.

Use 'character map' or ALT+(the appropriate number)quote:Originally posted by brisket:quote:Originally posted by Xochiquetzal:

Hi Xoch:
I am not a MAC user but I have found this:
"On a Mac, to get a character, such as à , the user must type Option-` and then the vowel. For example, to make à , the user must type Option-` and then 'a', and to make Ã, the user must type Option-` and then Shift-a."
On Microsoft Word:
CTRL+`(accent grave), then the letter or the LETTER
(It won`t do it on here though. But it does it in Word.)
Regards
On the keyboard the apostrophe and the single quote are the same thing, but some people are apparently using the grave accent ` instead of the single quote/apostrophe. 'quote:Originally posted by BROXI:quote:Originally posted by Dave - GaGa:

Yes, but it looks more like an apostrophe than `

Your majesty, one does, what one can, with what one is given.
