Here's the story

I got the idea (after using my Fitbit and reading articles on the Internet) to walk 100,000 steps in one day.

Following some basic calculations based on my walking profile I decided that starting at 6am I would finish by 9.30pm.

So I set off at exactly 6am and cracked off the first 30,000 steps in no time, or at least it felt like no time. I took a short lunch break around 11:30, chargrilled chicken, a large Americano and a stem ginger biscuit courtesy of CaffΓ© Nero and their participation in the "eat out to help out" scheme.

Cracking on I headed out of the city in the direction of the parks, there is a fantastic walk which takes you from park to park, hopping across a road at each juncture. This walk took me into what can best be described as countryside. Sheep grazed in fields as I walked by and 50,000 steps came up.

I headed back the city parks, circled them a few times and headed home for a toilet break and to fill my 2l bottle of water.

As I headed out to knock off the final 25,000+ steps, It began to dawn on me that my legs were aching and my pace had slowed to that of a fast tortoise!!

I eventually finished off the 100,000 around 10pm. I was absolutely knackered and could not wait to have a bath and bed.

Summary:

  • 72.9 Kilometers walked (approx 41 miles)
  • Around 8,710 calories burnt
  • A full set of aching limbs
  • 2.5 litres of water consumed

Here are a couple of pieces of information from Fitbit and Strava, the apps and devices I used to track my challenge. Pictures below.

Of course i was going to reply with a sarcastic comment - it would be rude not to after all this time.

Something like,

"I could sum up EC's challenge in 3 words, "metrosexual fit twit"

But i'm preferring,

"Cafe Nero hero"

I'm agog - how did you manage to walk 40+miles?????

I once walked 6 miles and almost died - i'm amazed EC, well done!!

I'm liking CaffΓ© Nero Hero.

I managed it by starting early and walking all day.

Enthusiastic Contrafibularities

Way back in the mists of antiquity - when I was a student, there was an annual 'Sponsored walk from Drymen to Glasgow University. I did it for two years in a row. If memory serves - it was about 40 miles or kilometres, and took the best part of the day. I doubt I'd be able to complete that distance inside one day these days, but it was good fun and achievable back then.
