It is nearly two years since the ban on smoking in public places was enforced in England. Do you think the ban should stay or be knocked on the head? May be you feel some places would be ok such as pubs where as not so good in restaurants, so please leave your opinions as well.

I have a smoking phobia, so love the smoking ban.
I think it should stay because of the effects of passive smoking.
I do not smoke myself but I am tolerant of smokers personally and I do let them smoke in my home.(by a open patio door)

It's done for a lot of the pubs where I live.
I am all for people feeling comfortable in their surroundings...but, I do feel that the word ..'choice' was wiped out with the blanket ban.
I was in JFK Airport several years ago and they had a 'Smoking Room' donated and funded by an Artist (shamed to say I cannot remember his name) but the 'Air Filtering' was fabulous, could'nt smell the smoke, the atmosphere was relaxed and great, music playing, free coffee...Pilots and air staff came and went....If it could have been done there why can't it be done all over?

areas and rooms should still be available for smokers. when i used to get a late night tube, the smoking carriage was the safest place.

Same place all smoke goes, through the black hole in the ozone layer.
I've given up now for about 5 weeks. Yay.
I dont see why we cant have pubs just for smokers.
After all in Parliament their still allowed to smoke in their posh pub.
Next it will be like in California where you cant smoke even on the street.
Like cars aren't polluting our lungs and giving our kids asthma.

I am a smoker myself and feel that consideration should be taken for those that don't. So I actually welcomed the ban, although in the pubs I couldn't see why they couldn't go back to the old ways where the lounge was non smoking and the bar was smoking. My only other gripe is that it would be nice to have some sort of undercover shelter outside so we don't get wet/ too hot while we are out there.

in my day it was, all the others were empty, people travelling feel safer, the atmosphere was party mode, non smokers coughed spluttered and went green - did they change carriage?
no! the cowards were perfectly happy to fill their lungs

mp's - do as i say, not as i do!
pub allocation is a great idea - will be bursting at the seams!
as an ex smoker of 10 months and quite likely to slip up should temptation pass my way, i want it to stay in force. best deterrant for me. however lets REMOVE THE BLOODY NO SMOKING SIGNS which litter the entrances to all our buildings.
they do not feel the need to put signs up saying no murdering permitted do they so why do we need the no smoking signs. rediculous!
ooh get me, i just went all angry

Great point after all you do not go into a carpet shop and see a sign on the door that says "we do not sell cars"

Where I worked part-time as a Student they had a smoking room and even though I don't smoke I used to sit in there with them because they were the most fun.
*just my personal experience*

Unfortunately it is a legal requirement for these signs to be in place to indicate you are entering a public area. These places can be fined for not displaying them

Beaurocracy and redtape, proving what a waste of time they are yet again

I absolutely agree with you The only reason I know this was when the law came in one of my friends was a site manager and I remember having to order all the signs. I asked her why as surely everyone knows this law is coming in and she told me that it's got to be done. Apparently it's not always clear that you are entering a public building

Ya I remember as well shortly after the ban started a man entered a pub with a cigarette that was lit. He was asked to leave but he stated he was not smoking but just had a lit cigarette in his hand. At the time there were reports that millions would be spent on having to change the signs as he was considered right. Never heard anymore about it though and all the signs seem to have stayed the same ...
I would like to shake that mans hand Jimbo.
Also smokers aren't allowed to smoke in their own homes for 3 days prior to any worker coming round. Like a plumber or such.
BeerBelle this is your prize.

Probably considered child abuse nowadays.
as a smoker i voted yes.... you get some good banter while outside puffing away
it's great going to a pub and not coming home stinking like a smoker and being able to enjoy a meal out with my sproglet without someone guffing fag smoke all over us.
long may the ban continue.
long may the ban continue.
My hubby just came back from a business trip in Belgium and everything he wore stank of fags because it's ok to smoke over there. I think the ban is brilliant.
I think the ban should be amended, so that pubs can choose whether to be smoking/non smoking, because a lot of landlords are having trouble surviving.

It wouldn't work though. I was raised in a pub and my dad was a non smoker and hated smoking but he would have had to open to smokers if other pubs did. I don't think it's the smoking ban that's affected pubs as much as the cheap booze from supermarkets and the influence of the chain-breweries tbh.

The best place to pull a bird is outside smoking.
I'm dying for a cig right now and it's been 5 weeks, I have had 4 pints though lol. I know I'd instantly regret having one as soon as I lit it, it would taste disgusting too. Damn evil drug.
Make it illegal to smoke, prison for anyone that does lol.
Hi Jumbo Jimbo, haven't spoke to you for ages.
I'm a smoker but I don't mind the smoking ban. I end up staying in/going to people's houses and having a drink more, which costs less and when I do go to the pub, I enjoy sitting in the beer garden. lol

Is it not banned totally in England yet?quote:Originally posted by Puddychops:

It's not the ban that's done for the pubs, it's the pathetic people who subscribe to this stupid idea that one is unable to socialize without a cigarette.quote:Originally posted by Garage Joe:

Just have a blanket ban. Problem solved!quote:Originally posted by fairy_suzie:quote:Originally posted by Jumbo Jimbo:
