It's really hard to say but i think it's a bit more than that. Because he tends to write about one scenario, like Danaerys, for a good bit, then change to the Wall and Jon Snow for a while, then go to Kings Landing..... the show is probably up on the book story line to the end of book 3. Brilliant books and the series is amazing.... even if little bits get left out that niggle
