Algebra is what you use to get the answer even if you think it's just Arithmetic.
If a=9 and p=4
Then:-
9p + 6a =?

though as there are 9 pears and the apples cost 9 pence one could just add 4 and 6 then multiply the sum by 9 so just arithmetic (in this example )
